What is fault finding and what does it mean ?

What should your electrician have, to do fault finding?

Fault finding is the testing procedure of electrical installation (or part of it) to determine where a fault occurs.
This is a first step to diagnose the fault before you can plan how to fix it.

Usually it consists of inspection and testing procedures which will easily allow you to find where the fault is.
That is why it is important to choose a fully qualified electrician with testing experience who will find and point out a real problem/fault and repair it.
Otherwise you can temporarily fix the fault but your installation could still be unsafe and the problem will come back sooner or later.

# trade qualification/registration in government body/portfolio experience –
you can not repair something if you do not know how it is working. Of course there is always a chance you can disconnect a few things or hit a few places but usually it could sort the problem for a short period of time.
We have seen tripping mcb because of faulty socket where a self-made electrician said to a client a few hours earlier that this is caused by steam from a kettle – which obviously she did not use and mcb still was tripping.
No knowledge, no solution.

# qualification 2391/2392 –
which confirms that he knows the testing procedure and can carry work professionally. Without that knowledge there is nothing you can find and repair properly.
We have seen really dodgy installations but with proper knowledge everything can be repaired – sometimes it only takes more time.

# multimeter -
To carry fault finding you have to own proper testing equipment.
Multimeter is essential and allows you to go through testing procedures and verify circuits.
Good electricians always have good tools which make them more efficient.

What is fault finding?

Fault finding is the testing procedure of electrical installation to determine where a fault occurs.

What are the key steps of electrical fault finding?

  • do a research, get as much information as possible from clients

  • test the circuit and locate the fault

  • determine and rectify the fault

  • test the circuit and re-energise it

Do you repair faults on the same day?

Yes, in most cases the fault is rectified in the same day.
Less likely some components are required and a second visit is necessary.

How much does it cost to do fault finding?

The cost of investigation, finding a fault and repairing it is around £90.
When installation is in bad condition or there is difficult access then extra charge for extra hours is required.
Similar situations are with repairs, usually they are straightforward but sometimes it requires a second visit and that increases costs.

How long does it take to find a fault and repair it?

Finding a fault and repairing it usually take up to 1h.
If there is something more complicated and some material needed than repair could take extra time and visit.

Open circuit.

Your appliances, accessories or any electric load you are using in your home are conneed by wires.
Throughout that wire current flows from your electric supplier to your consumer unit and to all electrical points that you are using in your home. Now imagine that for example one of the connections wasn’t tight enough and conductors separate and they are not touched together – the current will not get to your electrical point and it is not going to work.
That is open circuit – quite a common fault.

Open Ring/sockets.

Usually your electrical circuit is like a line – starting from one of your circuit breakers in the consumer unit and finishing at the point of use of that power ie. your oven. But sockets could be different, because there could be more load/accessories connected to them, than instead of increasing cable size often you can have them in ring – that means cable from circuit breaker is going to all sockets (one by one) and from last socket extra cable going back to circuit breaker.
That way you have 2 cables in your circuit breaker , which means that current can flow in two directions and thanks to that you can use more electrical accessories at once!
But the problem starts when one of your connections is open and current can flow only one direction – in that case the standard 32A circuit breaker is not gonna protect the cable anymore!
Then using too much power you will create more heat inside the cable – after some time the cable could be melted and cause fire!
Open rings are common and dangerous faults!

Short circuit (tripping circuit breaker).

When your circuit breaker trips all the time it is most likely you have a short circuit fault.
Short circuit is nothing else like touch of two live conductors together and this creates heating of the wires and sparks. In every electrical point of your house you should have 3 conductors and they should touch each other.
If for example brown and blue will be connected by water in outside light it will cause a short circuit and trip circuit breaker.

RCD tripping.

RCDs generally detect the current flow in your cables. Current flow on one conductor supplying all electrical accessories and going back to circuit breaker on another conductor – same amount of current flow on each conductor, in and out. If there is a difference in power level on those conductors – that means that power is most likely on some metal parts in your home!
RCD should trip power off and most likely save you from electrocution by touching a metal switch or kettle for example.
RCDs are great equipment to improve our safety.
